Mode’s 25th anninversary on Billboard Club Chart

Depeche Mode marks its 25th year of charting on Hot Dance Club Play with its 25th chart entry. “Suffer Well” (Sire/Mute) is the group’s seventh chart-topper.

The pop-synth outfit from England made its first appearance on the Club Play list the week of April 4, 1981, with “Dreaming of Me,” which peaked at a lowly No. 47. The first Depeche Mode song to top this survey was “Strangelove,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 in August 1987. It was the group’s only No. 1 in the 1980s.

There was only one chart-topper in the 1990s as well. “It’s No Good” had a one-week reign in June 1997. The other Depeche Mode songs to reach pole position all charted in this decade.

Those five No. 1 hits are:

“Dream On,” one week (2001)
“I Feel Loved,” two weeks (2001)
“Freelove,” one week (2002)
“Precious,” two weeks (2005)
“Suffer Well,” one week to date (2006)
