Depeche Mode’s show in Kansas City last night, had to be cut short because of illness. Dave Gahan, who turned 44 just the day before the show, had to leave the stage early due to what was allegedly a severe stomach infection, contracted on the band’s recent stop in Mexico for three shows.
Dave managed to get through six songs, after which he could no longer go on. Reports indicate that the singer collapsed backstage, and was taken to hospital.
How this will affect tonight’s show in Chicago is not yet known, but we will keep you updated with information as we get it.
In an effort to make up for the heavily abbreviated show, Martin went back on to perform a total of six songs in a row, including “Leave In Silence”, which the band hasn’t performed in the States in nearly two decades.
Trying to explain the scene, one fan had this to say: “In what has to be the weirdest thing I have ever witnessed at a concert, it was so weird to see [“In Your Room”] start with no Dave present. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING!!! went to hell after that! You had roadies coming out and telling everyone what song was next after every song. Fletch talked to the crowd. Martin looked freaked out! He really tried to keep it together, but the crowd was freaked out. [I] spoke with someone [from the band’s entourage] after the show [and] he said that Dave got very sick in Mexico and tried [to complete the show] tonight , but during “Stripped” it caught up with him. He said it was his voice and also Montezuma’s revenge.”
“They started “In Your Room” but the programming cut out, so Martin said they would have to stop and do something else due to “technical difficulties”. At that point, I said to the couple next to me “I don’t see Dave.” After Martin sang “Leave in Silence”, one of the roadies announced that “we are unable to continue, because we have lost our man in the middle.” At first I was shocked. Fletch then came on and said that Dave had a medical emergency, but that they would try to carry on,” another fan said.
We will keep you updated with any news as we get it, and we hope the best for Dave and a speedy recovery. “Suffer Well” indeed.
